Fort Nelson

Client
Fort Nelson (Royal Armouries Museum of Artillery)

Project
to create a home for the Royal Armouries collection of artillery and associated material

Solution
Fort Nelson had few indoor galleries and outdoors was very exposed to the coastal elements. Graphic panels and captions were developed for indoor and outdoor use using specially commissioned illustrations. These were also used to good effect in the publicity material.

Traditional use of iron to support graphics harmonises with the iron gun racks and other barracks furniture. External captions cast in coloured concrete and printed in traditional weatherproof enamel to sympathise with the fortŐs architecture.

Wayfinding solutions were produced and coordinated with the guide book to get the visitor around this large fort without a tour guide (the signs were also in enamel in order to survive the elements).

Temporary exhibits, such as the atom bomb (bottom left), were given special treatments.
